Help your students to explore the non-fiction shelves with this engaging scavenger hunt activity! These lessons are designed for virtual OR in-person instruction. This helpful product includes 36 cards with Dewey numbers, words, pictures, and QR codes and provides a fun way to introduce your students to informational text in the library.

This helpful product for school librarians includes:

  • 2 pages of teaching tips

  • 2 different lesson plans for up to 4 library visits or virtual lessons

  • a list of favorite non-fiction picture books to read aloud

  • 36 printable scavenger hunt cards with QR codes

  • 36 printable scavenger hunt cards without QR codes

  • 36 digital (Google Slides) scavenger hunt cards with QR codes

  • 36 digital (Google Slides) scavenger hunt cards without QR codes

  • 4 different printable exit tickets

  • 4 different digital (Google Slides) exit tickets

These cards use simple words and popular categories, like jokes, frogs, bugs, and magic.

Your students can work individually or in teams to find the matching card on the non-fiction book shelf. Or they can match the card to a book with the same Dewey number. Print them on colorful card stock and laminate them for use year after year, AND save them to your Google Drive to share them digitally in future years.

I only used whole numbers, no decimals, on these cards to make them easier for younger students to use and understand.

At our school, I used the printable cards to create a scavenger hunt with first grade students so that they could become familiar with the non-fiction section of our school library before choosing a non-fiction book to check out. This was the kick-off for a study of non-fiction text features.

You can see photos of this scavenger hunt in action on my blog: Library Learners.

I include QR codes that link to Google Slides with an image of what your students should find. Check out the preview to see a sample!

This library scavenger hunt includes full-page and half-page exit tickets so that your students can respond to the books and information that they find, and you can see what they’ve learned from this engaging library lesson. Students can respond on paper or with the linked Google Slides.

The thorough lesson plans included with this download can be used year after year with multiple grade levels.
